The Popularity of STEM Majors Grows at American Universities

STEM majors in the United States have seen a very significant increase since 2009

This growth will help boost the US job market amidst a shortfall in talent in the science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) fields. The indicative shift could reflect the student’s awareness of the value of college degrees and the relevance in the job market after the 2007-2009 recession. The average cost of tuition and fees at private and public four-year universities increased to $34,740 and $9,970, respectively, in the 2017-2018 school year. The largest salaries are also found in the math and tech fields, while the value of an arts and humanities degree is less clear, as reported by Bankrate.com.

American students planning to attend university are following the money trail when deciding on their major. Those receiving a bachelor’s degree in the United States over 25 who majored in the STEM field increased to 47 percent from 4.2 percent in 2009. According to a Census Bureau report, there was a rise of almost one million students in the time frame, and in 2017, 224,000 students. Over the same period, literature and languages bachelor’s degrees declined from 4.6 percent to 4.2 percent.
